March 4: Modern reliances

And God said, 'Let there be light' and there was light, but the Electricity Board said He would have to wait until Thursday to be connected. Spike Milligan

Thank goodness for generators!!! Before we moved here, we had little idea of extreme weather conditions, we basically knew spring, fall (without the beautiful color) and summer, and that was it. So, when shopping for houses, my clever husband rather liked the one with the natural gas generator, seeing we have no idea what we are up against with no power (and therefore, no heat, or anything else) mid-winter. Anyhoo....for this and other reasons, this became our home. And for the last three years, the generator has religiously fired up on a Wednesday afternoon for about 10 minutes to make sure it is in good working order....and has just become part of life. Well, in the storm on Friday, the power was knocked out rather soon, and the generator kicked in and has been running ever since. It obviously doesn't run the whole house, but keeps the basics on, like the furnace, fridge and a couple of lights, and we have a gas stove, so all is good. If for nothing else, I am SO grateful for the generator (and Mike even more so, since he is away....as he usually is during these big weather events!!!) Since not everyone has the luxury of a generator, this was the scene when I fetched Nic from work....only the store was lit up....everything else was in pitch darkness....a little like a zombie town!
